Mother’s Day 2012 was spent doing what we love to do… out on the water, where time slows down and we can relax and enjoy all that is around us. This year’s adventure took us back to a favourite local spot where we met up with a Scout group who had been out for 4 days, and a school group from Whitby. It was nice to spend the day paddling, walking on the beach and enjoying a nice spring day. Kyla met a new friend… we named her lightening :)
I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed so due to an error on my part Kyla and I found ourselves with a day to spend in Moncton. We decided to make the most of it, explore and enjoy our extra time…
We walked along the trail of the Petitcodiac River and learned all about the tidal bore from a couple sharing the view with us.
It’s never a bad time of the year to go to the beach. It doesn’t matter that there is snow and the sand is frozen … it’s still our favourite place to be… This was definately our favourite afternoon of our mini March break visit with family.
Such a beautiful winter day… we decided to get out an enjoy it on snowshoes :)
Two girls, a lot of sprinkles and a cupcake maker…
We took Kyla to a very special spot yesterday, Crawford Lake Conservation Area in Milton, Ontario. I’m not sure why it took us so long to take her there, but yesterday proved to be the perfect day to do so. Crawford Lake is a very special place to us both (Kevin and I) as we worked there many years ago. While walking through that escarpment area I came to a realization. This was a space and a place that inspired me in part to be who I am today. I love to be part of the peace and beauty of natural surroundings, I love to learn and share in real and authentic ways, and I love to be active and to keep moving…
Beautiful Weekend in @ptbo_canada. Kyla and I spent as much of it outside as we could. Here are some of the things we encountered on our adventures…
Late summer hike to Orange Corners Trestle bridge… perfect day for it <sigh>
There is no such thing as a bad day at the beach…
Nothing is as beautiful, relaxing or memorable as a late afternoon exploring at the beach… this afternoon was spent at Robinson’s Island (PEI National Park) where we saw lots of hermit crabs, starfish and waves… absolute heaven…
Canoe Trip - Day 5 (Last Day) - Loch Veratie
Got up early so that we would have plenty of time to enjoy our last few hours on the lake before meeting our new friend Russell (outfitter) at the takeout point at noon.
We paddled slowly and enjoyed the green space of this particular lake which had been our home for 2 nights.
We finished our trip at the Elphin Fish Hatchery which was at the end of a private road (the lake and the area surrounding was owned by Ledmore Estates). We met the 2 employees at the hatchery and had a brief tour of the operation. They raised 120,000 salmon which would be taken out to the sea wiers in fall.
We also met three fisherman who were starting their day paddling up the lake to drift back and fly fish. They explained how access to private land was granted. They had paid for access by car to the lake to fish on it for the day. We were allowed to paddle and camp in the area without worry as we got there by our own steam (paddled and hiked). Anyone could enjoy the privately owned areas as long as they didn’t access it by car. Kind of an interesting notion, especially in a country that doesn’t have a lot of public park space.
That rule did hinder us a bit though at the end of the trip. Because it was a private road that was gated and required a key to drive down to the lake, we had to hike our gear uphill for about 1 km to the public access road so that Russell could pick us up. Oh well - we still had a bit of adventure left in us :)
Russell picked us up and took us into Ullapool which is the gateway to the Outer Hebrides (which we’d love to visit next time). We feasted on Fish and Chips and were on our way back to Inverness where we were spending some time on our own exploring before returning by train to Edinburgh.
This canoe trip was a fabulous way for us to experience the natural beauty of Scotland. We were enchanted and captivated our whole time out there and have wonderful memories of our adventure in the highlands.
